Rama was banished to the forest for 14 years and His victory over Ravana marked the end of His exile. The Lord was united once more with Sita and returned to Ayodhya where the citizens were feeling the pain of His absence as if they had lost their own dear son.
Last wednesday the 12.10 was Rama Vijaya Dasami (Dusshera) and the Appearance of Madhvacarya. On the night of Rama Vijaya is the Dusshera festival taken place in Ayodhya, and elsewhere in India, when a tall effigy of Ravana is burned. It is usually made of a highly inflamable combination of wood, cloth and straw, with ten painted heads and a torso stuffed with fireworks. Since Ravana was the very personification of evil, (lust, greed, anger, envy, illusion and madness), according to Valmiki´s epos Ramayana, as people watch him burn they silently pray to Lord Rama the destroyer of all evil, that He may also destroy and burn their own bad qualities.
At that day, this month one also celebrates the birthday of the great saint Madhvacarya (1238-1317) the incarnation of Hanuman, who like it is said, preserved and restored Bhakti, fighting off the Ravanas of atheistic philosophical opponents with the arrows of his words.
